Tuesday: UK's Infected Blood Scandal—Oracle Cards Have Their Say On Institutional Failures & Cover-Up
Tuesday 21st May 2024
As I thought, we’ll be seeing a lot going on this week. We’ve had a number of readings in the last year or so that point to major institutional failures being revealed again and again, (and in different countries, so this isn’t just a UK thing). Lots of reckonings, a sense of trusted institutions crumbling, major structural issues and dysfunctions finally coming to the surface to be addressed.
But this one IS in the UK and is massive news here today, representing the worst scandal in the NHS’s long history, where around 30,000 people were given blood infected with hepatitis and HIV when under its care between the 1970s and 1990s. The results of a seven-year inquiry, the Infected Blood Inquiry, chaired by Sir Brian Langstaff, came out in an absolutely damning, not to mention shocking, report yesterday.
The disaster was entirely avoidable, the inquiry found, but continued because it was actively covered up both within the NHS, by doctors and by successive governments, including vital papers being deliberately destroyed by government departments. It was “no accident”, Langstaff said.
Calling the results of the inquiry “a day of shame for the British state” both Sunak and Starmer apologised on behalf of their respective parties’ past involvement when in government and vowed a massive program of compensation to those infected (around 3,000 have died, but many more are living with disease as a result)
Heads will roll, and there is the possibility too of criminal charges for those found responsible.
Given it’s such a massive story, I wanted to do a reading on it, although it will mainly be an illustrative one today (I may return to the topic later). For this, I’m using the Star spread, which is a small but often surprisingly deep layout ideally used for problem solving and getting to the root of issues.
You can find out how to lay and read it here:
This time, we’re using the French Grimaud 2022 version of the Sibylle des Salons . I’ve centred the reading on the “structural /institutional revelations” (City House/Important Revelation) but I left the outcome open, and used three cards rather than one to give more detail.
Here’s how the cards fell.
The Cards (in English)
Marriage, Presents, Angry Woman; Male Consultant; City House, Important Revelation; Soldier; Impediment/Opportunity; Victory
So what is it telling us?
Read on to find out.
