Well, more unwanted trouble for the already beleaguered PM Rishi Sunak. Not only are the polls saying his party are expected to be trounced in its worst defeat this century on July 4th (quite something given his opposition aren’t necessarily being feted as particular popular alternative, just the only alternative), but alas, the murky tale of gambling and bet-placing at a bookies from someone close to him over the date he was going to call the election has sprouted new legs.
Originally, it was discovered that one aide close to Mr Sunak had placed a bet on the date he was going to call the election before he did it, making himself a tidy sum. Now it appears the UK Gambling Commission is investigating several more people, including the Conservatives’ director of campaigning and his wife who are both candidates, as well as Sunak’s police protection officer, for placing bets about the date of the announcement.
I mean, “cringe” really. SO embarrassing, (and yes, my American friends, I’m aware you’ll all be going, “Hah, you think THAT’S embarrassing? Just you wait for the run-up to November in the US!” And of course, I will be reading on that as it gathers pace).
Anyway, so today’s Friday reading is just a short one, a 7 card bridge spread using the French Sibylle des Salons, with the Gamblers card at the centre for the, this time, literal betting.
Let’s take a look:
