Sibylle des Salons/Parlour Sibyl/Sibilla Indovina Card Meanings
Here are the main card meanings, including reversals, and images for all the above Sibylle des Salons cards. In terms of the images, the left is the Lo Scarabeo international Sibilla Indovina version, which appears to take the most original design and title, in the middle, the 1979 English version reproduction of that card in the JM Simon “Grimaud Parlour Sibyl”, on the right, the current French Grimaud version of the Sibylle des Salons.
The numberings on the Lo Scarabeo version correspond with the alphabetical listing of the cards in French; the others are grouped in order to according to their suits and then numbered.
Any variations between decks (and sometimes translations) are noted
Dark-Haired Man/Insight (Un Jeune Homme Brun/now Perspicacité)
Upright: If you wish to use for physical characteristics, a young dark-haired man. Otherwise, the qualities of insight, an insightful, smart, sharp-minded individual. A relatively young person with cunning, discretion, determination, quick wit. A hard worker, a new lover.
Reversed: Immaturity, deceit, possible danger, a young man of dubious reputation, someone not to get involved with.
Similar to: Oddly, this card upright contains the more positive qualities of the Lenormand Fox, particularly the smartness and quick-wittedness, and in reverse, the more common meanings of the Fox.
Playing Card Reference: Jack of Spades
Notes: Obviously, the idea of equating physical characteristics with personality attributes can be somewhat problematic in readings, and takes rather an old fashioned view. Like all the other “people” cards outside of the two Consultants in the deck, the updated Grimaud deck has changed the title of this card to make it less about physical appearance and a person and more a characteristic or quality card. You can, of course, still use the card as a person, but the main people cards are the Consultants.
