One of the most well-known and popular oracle decks of the 19th Century, the so-called “Petit Lenormand” cards are named after infamous French fortune-teller-to-the-stars, Mlle Marie Anne LeNormand (1772–1843). She was so esteemed she read for the Emperor Napoleon and Empress Josephine, (although not, it must be said, in ways always to Napoleon’s liking.), had a fearsome international reputation as a fortune teller, but also managed to find herself imprisoned in France on a number of occasions, although never for long.
